Bushmills Inn

Originally an old coaching inn, Bushmills is located at the home of the world’s oldest distillery.  Open peat fires, gaslights and stripped pine set the tone in the public rooms. From the hall, with its welcoming turf fire and the elegant Drawing Room take the grand staircase to the Gallery. Spacious and creatively designed bedrooms come equipped with flat screen TV’s and complimentary WiFi, all have their own sitting room area, small dressing room and, of course, private bathrooms. Enjoy the “craic” in the Gas Bar where its gaslights set the tone and inspired the name of this Victorian style bar. Make sure you enjoy the “Taste of Ulster” restaurant overlooking the garden courtyard; this award-winning restaurant takes in the original 17th century stables and wine cellar.

The Slieve Donard Hotel

Situated at the foot of the beautiful Mountains of Mourne, The Slieve Donard Hotel stands in six acres of private grounds, which lead to an extensive golden beach and a private walking entrance to the famous Royal County Down GC. “The Slieve” is one of the nicest hotels in all of Northern Ireland after a recent huge refurbishment. The Oak Restaurant provides the excellent culinary delights and breakfast, and Chaplin’s Bar is named after the famous comedian who visited the hotel in 1921.  The Elysium Health Club provides a sanctuary of sheer indulgence for both body and mind, and is recognized as one of the top Spa’s in the country.  The adjacent Percy French is a fun sports pub on property with high quality pub food. This is the place to stay while golfing Royal County Down!

Golf Courses

Royal County Down Golf Club

Normally everyone’s favorite and one of the world’s best links, Royal County Down GC is set in the ocean dunes beneath the Mountains of Mourne. Whenever you think of great sums of money being spent on golf course development, think of Royal County Down and the four gold pieces that Old Tom Morris was paid to lay out this classic links, which he did in one day! Situated along the shores of The Irish Sea, the setting is absolutely beautiful, and the links is a classic. The dunes are high and covered with gorse and high grass, and there are no less than five holes beginning with blind tee shots.  The course starts with a par 5 and finishes with the 18th, a par 5 with no less than 23 bunkers. There are elevated tees, fast greens, loads of bunkers, water hazards (on a links?), long par 3's, short par 3's, and gorse.  Many consider Royal County Down to be the best links course in the world, and it is ranked #6 in the Golf Magazine World Top 100.

Royal Portrush Golf Club - Dunluce Course

Far north is one of the best and hardest links anywhere, and the only course in Ireland to have hosted the British Open (1951). RPGC is ranked #15 in the Golf Magazine World Top 100. Founded in 1888, King Edward the VII visited in 1893, and it thereafter became a “Royal” Golf Club.  There are two courses here, and the Dunluce Course is the most famous one, having hosted the British Open in 1951.  Remember your camera, because there are some spectacular views of the beautiful cliffs and ocean. Royal Portrush is a unique and unforgettable golfing experience, and a few local members include Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell!

Portstewart Golf Club

Within a short drive of Portrush is the often underrated “Portstewart Strand Links”, beautiful and testing with many high dunes and holes near the sea. Since first opening in 1894, the Portstewart Golf Club has stood in the considerable shadow of its neighbor, Royal Portrush. In 1990, the club opened a stretch of seven holes (the 2nd through the 8th) that traverse dunesland, comparable in dramatic contour to that at any links. The new holes, which were designed by a small, internal committee well-versed in the dictates of modern course design, have thrust Portstewart into the top rank of Irish links. The opening hole is among the most talked about in Ireland … see for yourself.  The club actually has 3 courses, the famous “Strand” which you play, plus the shorter “Old” and “Riverside” courses.

Ardglass Golf Club

Ardglass Golf Club, County Down: (5344 to 6268 yards - par 70) - Located in County Down, Ardglass GC is the best “sleeper” in the North, and it's as unique a golf course as you'll find anywhere. For starters, the clubhouse is set in a 13th-century castle thought to be the oldest such building used for such a purpose in the world. The course starts with an incredible uphill coastal hole littered with jagged black rocks. Members tell you, "You've got the sea to the left and the whole of Ireland to the right." The next few holes play above the same coastline, and the Irish Sea is visible from about everywhere on the course. This is a really nice golf course with great hospitality and a beautiful setting. About a 30 min from Royal County Down, Ardglass is a fine hidden gem.

Ballyliffin Glashedy Links

Designed around incredible dunes and notorious bunkers in 1993, this course quickly established itself as a must play while in the Portrush area. Golfers will not easily forget the expansive panoramic views of countryside, coastline and ocean.  The Glashedy Links will host the 2018 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
