Royal Liverpool GC, Hoylake
6,240-7,110 yards | par 72
This historic course is located in the western Liverpool suburb of Hoylake, and thus it’s popular nickname “Hoylake”. In 1930 Bobby Jones won the British Open here, the second leg of his Grand Slam, and later Roberto Devicenzo in ’68, Tiger Woods in ’06 and Rory McIlroy in ‘14. Although relatively flat, the lay of the land is vulnerable to the strong prevailing winds which are likely to blow here and some sloping fairways that can run a nicely placed shot into the rough or bunkers. It is best advised to play here with a caddy your first time out as many tactical shots are required and many hidden hazards await including several in course out-of-bounds. Royal Liverpool also features perhaps England’s most elegant and welcoming clubhouse and locker rooms, recently refurbished to the highest standards. Ranked #69 in the world by Golf Magazine in 2013. Allow 1 hour drive time from Southport and there is a nice practice facility available onsite.

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, Lytham & St Annes
6,455-6,882 yards | par 71
Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present course was constructed in 1897. It is one of the premier links courses in the world (ranked #59 in the world by Golf Magazine in 2013), host to ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women's and Seniors Open Championships. Bobby Jones won his first Open here in 1926 (see the plaque on the leftside of 17th fairway). Lytham is among the best conditioned Open Championship venues, opens with a par 3, has lots of OB, and the small greens are normally quite fast, but the biggest defense is the 202 bunkers, which clearly dominate your club selection. No doubt you will be in many of them, and you will find this perhaps the hardest course you play on your trip. The clubhouse is among the finest in golf and visitors rooms, lockers, and restaurant are all well-appointed and the golf artifacts around the club are worth the trip alone. The dining areas (all except the Spike Bar) require suit and tie so be prepared. Nice practice facility onsite. Allow a 1 hour drive in each direction from Southport.

Royal Birkdale GC, Southport
6,817 yards | par 72
The Royal Birkdale GC links on Lancashire’s Southport Coast were originally laid out by George Low, but in the 1930’s Fred Hawtree and JH Taylor redesigned them and it is considered among the very best tests of golf anywhere (Golf Magazine ranked #31 in the world 2013). Birkdale has staged a multitude of major events, including the British Open on numerous occasions and the Ryder Cup (site of “The Concession” by Nicklaus to Jacklin). With most of the fairways being flat and greens generally well defined, Royal Birkdale is a much fairer test than many traditional seaside links. There are some great holes on the course including the 186 yards twelfth set among the sand hills close to the sea, and the heavily bunkered dogleg eighteenth. One of the best features is the majority of holes are solitude, you can’t see any other players from your fairway! This is a golf course that you will walk off the 18th, and want to set right back to the first tee to play it again! Good practice facility available onsite, the pro shop is among the most well stocked in the UK and the art deco clubhouse is fabulous on the inside.
