To find a course of this exceptional quality, so near to a major city center is unusual. The Royal Dublin is a formidable challenge with typical links holes. Located 3 miles east of Dublin on Bull Island (drive toward Howth and exit on Bull Island), this 6,909 yard par 71 links course, formatted of the traditional “out and in” variety, is a narrower links than normal. Recent maintenance improvements have once again made RDGC one of the most requested courses in the country. Royal Dublin has housed all the leading events in Ireland. The success here of the revived Irish Open has much to do with the heady deeds of Seve Ballesteros and Bernard Langer between 1983 and 1985. Royal Dublin has also played host to the Irish Women’s Championship, the Irish Professional Championship, and the Irish Men’s Native Open Championships.
Having hosted the Irish Open many times and the Walker Cup, it is said by many to have the finest five finishing holes in golf. Golf Magazine places it #54 in the world. One of Ireland's most prestigious clubs, the old clubhouse is set out on a peninsula, surrounded by the Irish Sea on the outskirts of Dublin. When Portmarnock first opened for play in 1894, golfers reached the first tee by boat, but now a road takes you out to the club. This course is considered by many to be one of the top five courses in Ireland, and measures 7054 yards and is a par 72. The course record of 66 is held by Christy O'Connor and Gary Player. Portmarnock is a pleasure to play, when you are fortunate enough to get on! Warning - allow enough time to make it to the course and do not be late here!!! There is a practice facility located about 3 minute drive away from the clubhouse – tokens required from the pro shop. Often lunch is included in your green fee … check upon arrival. Some carts are available if you reserve in advance.
