Vale do Lobo

With two championship courses overlooking Portugal’s Algarve coastline, Vale do Lobo offers something relatively unusual: two distinctly different rounds without ever leaving the resort.

The Royal Course delivers the drama, combining rolling fairways, pine trees and lakes with one of European golf’s most recognizable holes. The Ocean Course takes a different route, gradually working its way from undulating inland terrain toward a memorable sequence beside the Atlantic. Together, they make Vale do Lobo golf about far more than one famous clifftop tee shot.

Both courses also share a significant architectural heritage. Sir Henry Cotton designed the original golf at Vale do Lobo, with today’s Ocean Course formed from two of his original nine-hole layouts. The Royal was later created by American architect Rocky Roquemore using Cotton’s original plans, giving the two courses a shared history but very different playing identities.

Vale do Lobo is located in the central Algarve, close to Almancil and approximately 20 minutes by road from Faro Airport, making it particularly convenient for golfers arriving from elsewhere in Europe.

For US travelers, Faro can be reached via connecting services through major European gateways. Lisbon Airport provides another option, with Vale do Lobo around three hours south by road.

The resort’s location is also useful for a wider Algarve golf vacation. Quinta do Lago lies nearby, while Vilamoura and several other leading courses can be reached without requiring golfers to relocate between rounds.

Opened in 1997, the Vale do Lobo Royal Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout designed by Rocky Roquemore based on Sir Henry Cotton’s original plans. Playing through rolling terrain framed by umbrella pines, lakes and wildflowers, accuracy is important throughout – but it is the closing stretch that has made the course internationally recognizable.

The par-3 16^th is the headline act. The tee shot requires golfers to carry the ball across the red sandstone cliffs, with the Atlantic below and coastal winds adding another variable to club selection. It has become one of the most photographed golf holes in Europe and a defining image of golf in the Algarve.

Yet the Royal shouldn’t be reduced to a single hole. Earlier in the round, the almost island green at the par-3 9^th provides another memorable test, while the narrow corridors, strategic bunkering and water ensure the course demands thoughtful play long before golfers reach the cliffs.

If the Royal is defined by one dramatic clifftop moment, the Ocean Course builds gradually toward the Atlantic.

The 18-hole, par-73 Vale do Lobo golf course measures 6,122 meters and incorporates two original nine-hole courses designed by Sir Henry Cotton. Its undulating fairways initially run alongside a nature reserve before descending toward the coastline, creating a noticeable change in character as the round progresses.

That transition culminates in a standout stretch on the back nine. The par-4 11^th begins to introduce some of the course’s finest Algarve views, while the 14^th plays toward the beach. The par-3 15^th then runs alongside the shoreline, bringing golfers about as close to the Atlantic as the Ocean Course’s name promises.

Compared with the Royal, the Ocean asks golfers to work with changing terrain and shape a greater variety of shots. Playing both during the same trip therefore provides a much more complete picture of what golf at Vale do Lobo has to offer.

The Vale do Lobo Golf Resort operates year-round, although demand and playing conditions vary throughout the seasons. Spring and fall are particularly popular periods for Algarve golf, combining warm temperatures with generally comfortable conditions on the course.

Golfers can play either the Royal or Ocean individually, but anyone staying for several days should consider experiencing both. Despite sharing the same resort, the contrast between the Royal’s pine-lined and clifftop challenges and the Ocean’s gradual descent toward the Atlantic makes each round feel distinct.

Vale do Lobo Golf Club also offers a Golf Academy with two practice areas, alongside club, buggy and trolley rental, changing facilities, lockers and a golf shop.

Tee times should be arranged in advance, especially during the Algarve’s busiest golf periods. Coastal conditions can also introduce wind into both courses, so golfers should be prepared for the same hole to play very differently from one day to the next.
