Ombria

The Algarve may be famous for courses overlooking the Atlantic, but travel inland and the landscape begins to tell a very different story.

Set among the hills and valleys of the Algarve’s Barrocal region, the Ombria Golf Course replaces coastal cliffs and ocean views with olive groves, mature trees, natural waterways and rolling countryside. Designed by Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva, the course opened in 2023 as one of the region’s newest additions.

Rather than extensively reshaping the site, the course was designed around its existing natural features. Fairways follow the contours of the valleys, ancient trees have been incorporated into the routing and the Algibre River helps define the character of the landscape.

That creates a distinctively different experience from many of the Algarve’s established resort courses. Ombria golf feels quieter, more secluded and closely connected to rural southern Portugal – while still sitting only around 30 minutes from Faro Airport.

The 18-hole, par-71 Ombria Golf Course Portugal layout is designed to provide variety throughout the round, with elevation, natural vegetation and undulating greens creating much of the challenge.

The opening nine occupies the lower part of the site, moving through gently rolling terrain and established holm oaks. From the 10^th tee, the perspective changes as golfers look across the back nine and the Algibre River valley, introducing greater changes in elevation and a different visual character to the second half of the round.

Accuracy is particularly important from the tee. Native vegetation and out-of-bounds areas can punish shots that stray too far from the intended line, while the greens provide another challenge through their movement and contours.

Ombria is also a buggy-only course, helping golfers navigate its naturally hilly terrain. Tee times are spaced at 10-minute intervals, while practice facilities include putting and chipping greens.

For golfers accustomed to the Algarve’s famous coastal layouts, this contrast is precisely what makes Ombria worth including in a wider golf vacation.

Sustainability is an increasingly common part of golf course development, but at Ombria it influenced the layout from its earlies stages.

The course was designed to minimize the amount of maintained turf and irrigation required, allowing larger areas of the existing landscape to remain intact. Indigenous plants and trees have also been incorporated and restored across the site, while the routing works around established waterways and trees rather than removing them to create a more conventional resort landscape.

More than 1,800 linear meters of riparian habitat have been restored, while hundreds of holm oaks have been planted as part of the wider environmental program. The Ombria Golf Course has subsequently achieved GEO Certified status, which assesses areas including nature, water, energy, pollution prevention and community impact.

Importantly, those measures also shape the playing experience. Reduced areas of manicured turf create stronger visual boundaries between fairway and native landscape, while the preserved terrain gives individual holes a natural sense of separation.

Ombria’s inland Algarve location means the course can be played throughout the year, although conditions naturally change with the seasons.

Spring and fall remain particularly appealing periods for Algarve golf, combining warm conditions with some of the region’s most popular golfing months. Summer can be significantly hotter, making earlier tee times worth considering.

Because Ombria is buggy-only, golfers should factor this into their expectations before arriving. The Ombria Golf Club facilities also include putting and chipping areas, locker rooms and a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar for after the round.

The course works well either as a stay-and-play experience or as a contrasting round within a wider Algarve trip. Its inland setting provides a natural counterpoint to the coastal and pine-lined courses around Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo without requiring golfers to travel into an entirely different region.

Ombria is located near Loulé in the Algarve countryside, approximately 30 minutes by road from Faro Airport.

For US travelers, Faro can typically be reached via connections through major European gateways. Lisbon Airport is another option for golfers combining southern Portugal with time in the capital, although the drive south to Ombria takes around 2.5 hours.

Vilamoura and the Algarve coastline are also within easy reach, making Ombria practical to incorporate into a multi-course golf vacation without changing accommodations for a single round.

Despite that accessibility, the final journey inland is part of what distinguishes the experience. Leaving the busier coastal resorts behind for the hills around Loulé gives golfers a glimpse of a quieter, more rural Algarve before they even reach the first tee.
