The Canyons Course offers dramatic elevation changes and narrow bunkers, giving both professional and amateur golfers the chance to test their skills.

TPC San Antonio brings together two championship courses designed by two of golf’s most recognizable architects. Greg Norman created the Oaks Course with input from Sergio Garcia, while Pete Dye designed the contrasting Canyons Course.

Rather than offering a single JW Marriott San Antonio golf course, the destination gives visiting golfers access to two distinct interpretations of the surrounding landscape. The Oaks provides a traditional, strategically demanding tournament test through native oak trees, while the Canyons follows the more dramatic contours of the Texas Hill Country.

TPC San Antonio is a private resort facility. Access is reserved for club members and guests staying at the adjoining resort, making a coordinated golf package the most straightforward way for traveling golfers to experience both courses.

At more than 7,400 yards from the back tees, the Oaks Course was designed to challenge elite tournament players. However, multiple tee options and relatively few forced carries allow golfers to select a manageable version of the course.

Narrow corridors carved through native oak trees are balanced by wider fairways that provide alternative routes toward the greens. Natural-looking bunkers, native grasses and subtle changes in direction create a strategic test in which placement matters as much as distance. Golfers who watch the Valero Texas Open will recognize several of its defining holes, but the course reveals additional detail when played from ground level.

The Canyons Course creates a different experience. Pete Dye allowed the land to shape the routing, using more dramatic elevation changes and wider playing corridors to showcase panoramic views across an adjoining nature preserve. At just over 7,100 yards from the back tees, it’s shorter than the Oaks, but changes in elevation, strategic bunkering and exposed sections where the wind can influence club selection ensure that it remains a substantial test.

The Canyons can feel more visually forgiving from the tee, while the Oaks places greater pressure on accuracy and positional play. This makes the courses natural companions rather than interchangeable rounds. Playing both is the best way to understand the full JW Marriott San Antonio golf experience.

For most visiting groups, beginning on the Canyons Course creates a natural progression. Its wider fairways provide an opportunity to become familiar with Hill Country conditions, Bermuda grass and changes in elevation before taking on the narrower tournament corridors of the Oaks.

The Oaks can then become the centerpiece of the trip. Golfers should choose their tees carefully rather than attempting to play the course from the same distances used by PGA TOUR professionals.

From a suitable set of tees, its multiple routes and limited number of forced carries allow a wide range of golfers to engage with the strategy intended by Norman and Garcia.

More confident players may prefer to start on the Oaks and use the Canyons as a contrasting second round. Groups with additional time could also replay their preferred course, applying what they learned during the first round to its strategic decisions.

Spring and fall generally offer the most comfortable conditions for golf in San Antonio. Golfers planning a spring visit should consider the Valero Texas Open schedule, as tournament preparations and course closures may affect access to the Oaks.

Because TPC San Antonio isn’t a standard public-access facility, tee times should be arranged alongside an eligible stay rather than treated as a separate addition after other travel details have been confirmed.
