Camiral Golf Club (rebranded as Camiral Golf & Wellness) is nestled into the beautiful Catalan hills and is one hour away from Barcelona and 10 minutes away from the city of Girona. Originally opened in 1999 with the PGA Catalunya’s Stadium Course, the Club expanded with the much less taxing Tour Course in 2005, and the clubhouse itself opened in 2008. Designed by Ryder Cup veterans Neil Coles and Ángel Gallardo, the Stadium Course spans roughly 6,530 yards (par 72) with a steep slope of 155, which makes it one of Spain’s most challenging courses. The course is set among hills and pine forests, and due to being designed with the Ryder Cup in mind, many of the holes feature amphitheatre hollows.
Particular holes of note include the opening par 4, which has an elevated tee that directs players to a magnificent view of the Pyrenees. The 9th par 4 is the longest on the course and requires some consistent precision. The 13th par 3 is widely regarded as one of the most challenging holes out of all Spanish golf courses, but is framed by a lake and one of the best tee box frames in Europe.
Camiral Golf Club’s Tour Course is the younger and much less demanding course, boasting the same gorgeous views that the region is known for, and with bunkers, water features, and wide fairways dotted throughout. The course is more forgiving overall when compared to the Stadium Course, but requires players to navigate well-placed greens, take elevation into account, and manage risk/reward with bunkers.
Some noteworthy holes include the uphill 5th par 5, which is both elevated and has sand on the approach, as well as the 13th hole, which will require some precise golfing to avoid being caught up by the rippled fairway.
