Located in the northeast of Tasmania, Barnbougle is home to three exceptional courses – Barnbougle Dunes, The Lost Farm, and the short Bougle Run. Although it is a youngster in golf terms, Barnbougle Golf Resort in Australia is one of the country’s greatest golf resorts.
A trip here is worth flying halfway around the world to experience. The golf world stood up and took notice of little-known Tasmania as a links golf destination when the original Barnbougle Dunes course opened in 2004.
Barnbougle’s Dunes course was the brilliant vision and collaboration between Tom Doak and ex-Australian professional, Mike Clayton. Together, they transformed a former family potato farm on Tasmania’s pristine northeast coast into a World Top 100 Golf Course.
The Dunes has been as high as #11 on Golf Digest’s Top 100 list and sits firmly in Australia’s top 5 layouts. The design rewards creativity as the player strategically negotiates the dramatic dunes adjacent to Anderson Bay. The 4th hole is home to the largest bunker in the southern hemisphere and is definitely a hazard to avoid.
Blend world-class courses, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture on this 9-day trip to the Down Under. Whether you’re playing on iconic courses or enjoying the country’s natural beauty, Australia provides an unforgettable experience for golfers.

While similar, The Dunes sister course, Lost Farm, by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, has its own distinctive character. Located about a pitching wedge across the river that runs through the property it exhibits the minimalist style Coore/Crenshaw is known for as the routing compliments the natural contours of the landscape.
Like The European Club in Ireland, the land exposed 20 green and tee sites, therefore Lost Farm features two bonus par 3s – 13a and 18a. It has been as high as #23 on Golf Digest’s Top 100 list and enjoys being consistently among Australia’s Top 10 Courses.
The newest addition is Coore/Crenshaw’s short course, Bougle Run. The 14-hole layout sits on top of the dune line behind the Lost Farm course. This setting provides fabulous views across Lost Farm out to Anderson Bay. The design showcases twelve par 3’s and two par 4’s and is a great fun pre or post-round experience to compliment the two championship courses.
There are a variety of quality accommodations right on-site including the 2-bedroom Dunes Cottages, the 2-bedroom Ocean Villas, the 4-bedroom Bunker Villas, and the single and double accommodations in The Lost Farm Lodge. All are complemented by the Barnbougle Spa and dining options featuring the freshest local ingredients.
On Tasmania’s pristine northeast coast, Barnbougle dunes is a true golfing fairy tale. What began as a family potato farm is now one of the world’s most acclaimed destinations, redefining how golfers see Tasmania as a links haven.
The vision for the Barnbougle golf course came when developer Mike Keiser recognised the land’s potential for a Bandon Dunes-style resort. With farmer Richard Sattler on board, architects Tom Doak and Mike Clayton crafted a course shaped by the natural dunes and sandy base – the essence of links golf.
Since opening in 2004, Barnbougle golf has captured global attention. Its design embraces the raw coastal landscape, rewarding imagination and strategy at every turn. Windswept fairways, rugged bunkers, and Anderson Bay as a backdrop make Barnbougle Dunes an unforgettable test and a modern classic.
Playing Barnbougle golf in the Southern Hemisphere offers something truly different for those used to Northern Hemisphere links. Seasonal patterns and wind shifts transform the Barnbougle golf course throughout the year, ensuring no two visits feel the same.
In summer (December–February), expect firm fairways, long daylight hours, and running conditions that mirror the great Scottish links. Shots demand imagination, with bounce and roll carefully factored into every approach.
Winter (June–August) presents a different test. Softer turf invites more aerial play, but stronger winds and shifting weather create challenges of their own. Add to this the seasonal wildlife, from birdlife to marine activity along Anderson Bay, and Barnbougle dunes becomes as much a natural spectacle as it is a golfing one.
Set along Anderson Bay, Barnbougle dunes offers more than breathtaking views, it’s part of one of Tasmania’s most pristine marine environments. Dolphins, seals, and even migrating whales are often spotted during a round, making Barnbougle golf as memorable for its setting as for its challenge.
The coastal ecosystem is carefully protected, with native vegetation preserved to support local wildlife while doubling as natural hazards that shape the strategy of the Barnbougle golf course. This balance between world-class golf and environmental stewardship is central to Barnbougle’s character.
Even the tides play a role. Shifting patterns influence wind direction and strength, subtly altering how holes play. For seasoned visitors, understanding these natural rhythms becomes part of the strategy, adding yet another layer of intrigue to Tasmania’s most celebrated golfing landscape.
