Cape Wickham Golf Links

King Island, Tasmania, Australia

Remote island golf is a unique and special experience, and King Island, located in the Bass Strait halfway between Victoria, Australia, and Tasmania, boasts one of the world’s best golf courses. Just an hour from Melbourne, Cape Wickham Links golf course offers stunning views of Cape Wickham Lighthouse and vast ocean scenery from every hole.

With subtle nods to the traditional Links style of golf in Ireland and Scotland, Cape Wickham has become one of Australia’s best golf courses.

Darius Oliver, an Australian, is well-known Down Under as an expert in golf course architecture, both as an author and a consultant. In 2011, he convinced Duncan Andrews to purchase a piece of land he had discovered that was a natural landscape perfect for pure links routing by Cape Wickham Lighthouse.

The design, by Oliver and American golf course architect Mike DeVries, opened in 2015 and immediately climbed the ranks of every prestigious rating list around the world.

The Cape Wickham Design

While links courses are notable for the sandy turf created by being by the sea, it is still unusual to see the water from every hole, however, Cape Wickham offers stunning views throughout the routing.

The opening five holes play around the Cape Farewell Headland before turning inland for the next eight holes traversing sandhills and limestone outcroppings. The spectacular close features holes 14 to 18 returning to the sea towards the Cape Wickham Lighthouse.

The 15th plays directly at the iconic lighthouse and the signature 18th hugs Victoria Cove Beach as it doglegs right to the welcoming home green complex. Should the ever-present wind cause an errant shot, the beach is in play, back to the fairway above.

Of special note are the breathtaking views on the 3rd, 11th, and 17th par 3s. Each hole at Wickham has been designed to be unique and present endless shot-making possibilities. The course plays firm as a linksland layout should and all the surfaces – tees, greens and fairways are fescue.

Before or after your round experience the ‘Lighthouse Loop’ a fun and challenging 12-hole putting course on their expansive half-acre putting green.

There are 16 villa-style accommodations right on site and the restaurant features the exceptional local larder and seafood of King Island.

The Ever-Changing Challenge of Cape Wickham Golf

Perched on King Island in the middle of Bass Strait, Cape Wickham golf course delivers weather conditions found nowhere else in the game. Here, ocean currents and shifting air masses collide to create constantly changing elements that can transform a round more than once in a day. The infamous “Roaring Forties” winds ensure Cape Wickham golf tests every facet of a player’s skill year-round.

The island’s microclimate means calm mornings can quickly give way to 40+ mph winds by afternoon, demanding constant adjustments in strategy and club choice. Success comes not from power alone but from smart course management and creativity.

Seasonal swings add further intrigue. Summer brings firm, running fairways where the ground game thrives, while winter softens the surfaces, encouraging more aerial play but with heavier winds and unpredictable weather. To master Cape Wickham golf course is to embrace these natural rhythms,  reading the signs before conditions shift and adapting with every shot.

Playing in Harmony with Nature at Cape Wickham Golf

King Island is home to one of Australia’s most delicate ecosystems, and Cape Wickham golf course plays a dual role as both a championship venue and a sanctuary for native wildlife found nowhere else. The design of Cape Wickham golf carefully balances world-class play with environmental stewardship, preserving habitat corridors while showcasing the island’s natural beauty.

Across the seasons, golfers may spot migrating seabirds soaring above the coast or native marsupials emerging at twilight. The routing was crafted to highlight these encounters without disturbing fragile habitats, ensuring the course offers more than just great golf, it delivers a deeper connection to the landscape itself.
