What It’s Like to Play Pete Dye’s Best Courses

July 31, 2025
Pete Dye

Playing a Pete Dye course isn’t just about golf; it’s about confronting a test of strategy, nerve, and imagination. These are the courses that live in your memory long after the final putt drops. Whether it’s the intimidating fairways, the deceptive bunkers, or the sheer artistry of his coastal layouts, Pete Dye had a way of getting in your head and making you think differently about every shot.

Having played many of these legendary tracks myself, I can tell you firsthand: there’s a reason why Pete Dye’s best courses often appear at the top of any golfer’s bucket list. They’re visually stunning, brutally honest, and maddeningly fun. This guide is for those who want to experience the best of Pete Dye’s brilliance, paired with top-tier hospitality and unforgettable destinations.

Spotlight on Pete Dye

Pete Dye (1925–2020) was a former amateur champion and WWII veteran. He brought a new dimension to course design, heavily influenced by Scottish links but always stamped with his own style.

His philosophy? Reward the smart shot, punish the careless one. Dye believed in risk-reward golf, demanding precision and mental fortitude. You don’t overpower a Dye course, you outthink it. His designs feature narrow landing areas, penal bunkers, visual misdirection, and greens that can make your putter feel like a foreign object.

Top Pete Dye Courses Ranked

Below are my top Pete Dye courses, with detailed descriptions of what makes each one a premier destination.

1. Kiawah Island Golf Resort – The Ocean Course (South Carolina)

Many will tell you The Ocean Course is Dye’s greatest achievement. After walking it with a caddie, and I mean absolutely walk it because trying to go it alone would be madness, I completely agree. The course is windswept, water-lined, and wildly unforgiving. You’ll hit shots blind over dunes, you’ll lose a few balls to hidden lagoons, and you’ll battle breezes that shift by the minute.

But man, it’s fun. Every hole feels like a puzzle. Shooting your handicap here? That’s the round of your life. And if your ball finds the water, resist the urge to retrieve it. There are gators that call Kiawah home.

  • Ranked #37 in Golf.com’s 2025 Top 100 US Courses
  • Pete Dye’s coastal masterpiece and most highly ranked design
  • 2012 PGA Championship and 2021 PGA Championship venue
  • Oceanfront holes with constant wind challenges
  • Considered one of the most difficult courses in America

2. TPC Sawgrass – Stadium Course (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL)

If Dye ever had a stage, this was it. Designed specifically for the PGA Tour with Commissioner Dean Beman, TPC Sawgrass is the original “Stadium Course” and host of The Players Championship since 1982.

Yes, the island green at 17 gets the glory, but the challenge here runs deep. Overhanging trees, razor-sharp doglegs, and bunkers waiting to wreck your round on every hole. It’s surgical golf. Hit it straight, shape it smart, and accept the occasional bruising. I’ve played here and can tell you no matter how well you’re doing, this course always has a left hook waiting.

  • Ranked #48 in Golf.com’s 2025 Top 100 US Courses
  • Home of The Players Championship
  • Famous 17th hole island green
  • The original “Stadium Course” concept that revolutionized golf architecture

3. Casa de Capo – Teeth of the Dog (Dominican Republic)

Dye called this his favorite, and I get it. With seven holes hugging the Caribbean Sea and coral rock cut right into the design, the visuals are outrageous.

I always tell people: build your Dominican trip around this course, and try to play it twice. Once is never enough. I’m looking forward to seeing the updates in 2025, and I trust they’ll maintain Dye’s integrity while improving the conditions.

  • #1 golf course in the Caribbean according to multiple publications
  • Seven oceanfront holes with coral-based design
  • Pete Dye’s personal favorite among his own designs

4. Whistling Straits – Straits Course (Kohler, WI)

When Herb Kohler gave Pete a blank canvas on the shores of Lake Michigan and a near-unlimited budget, Dye delivered a masterpiece. Sure, there are a thousand bunkers (give or take), but truthfully, most aren’t even in play, if you’re playing from the right tees.

Walking this course with a caddie is a must. It’s long, rugged, and laced with major championship history. Don’t forget to grab a brat and beer at the turn, it’s practically tradition in Wisconsin and provides just enough fuel to tackle that back nine gauntlet.

5. La Quinta Resort & Club – PGA West Stadium Course (California)

This course scared professionals when it first opened in 198, and that intimidation hasn’t gone away. Between the sharp doglegs, water hazards, and famously penal bunkers, it’s one of the most difficult resort courses in America.

The 17th hole, “Alcatraz,” is a par-3 island green that will swallow your hopes along with your Pro V1. Still, it’s a blast to play, that’s if you don’t mind the occasional double bogey.

  • Desert mountain backdrop with strategic water features
  • Former PGA Tour venue with infamous “Alcatraz” 17th hole
  • Considered one of the toughest resort courses in America

6. Harbour Town Golf Links (Hilton Head, SC)

Lowcountry magic. This is one of the most enjoyable Dye courses I’ve ever played. Narrow, tree-lined fairways draped in Spanish moss lead to small, turtleback greens that demand finesse. Jack Nicklaus co-designed it with Pete, and it’s easy to see the learning curve. Dye’s fingerprints are all over this strategic gem.

Harbour Town has been the host of the RBC Heritage since 1969 and remains a favorite of both players and fans. If you’re heading to Hilton Head, stay at Sea Pines and walk this course like the legends.

7. Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa – Valley Course

Often overlooked, the Valley Course is a hidden gem. Designed by Dye with help from Bobby Weed and Jerry Pate, it’s more forgiving than its famous sibling but no pushover. At just under 7,000 yards, it plays tough, with elevation changes and a brilliant closing stretch, especially the par-5 16th, ending on a peninsula green.

Don’t treat it as a warm-up for the Stadium Course. It’ll test your game every step of the way.

  • More forgiving but equally strategic layout
  • Complementary design to the famous Stadium Course
  • Accessible alternative to the Stadium Course with similar design philosophy

Tournament and Prestige

Pete Dye reshaped tournament golf. His TPC Stadium concept at Sawgrass redefined what a fan-friendly layout could look like. His courses have hosted Ryder Cups (Kiawah), PGA Championships (Whistling Straits), and countless Tour events.

His influence also changed how golf is presented on TV: dramatic visuals, heroic carries, and intense pressure moments made for compelling broadcasts that helped grow the game. No one blended architecture and spectacle quite like Dye.

What to Expect When Playing

Precision Over Power – Wide fairways are rare. Dye wants you to think, not blast.
Signature Hazards – Water and bunkers appear in all the right (wrong) places.
Deceptive Greens – Fast, sloped, and tricky to read.
Visual Intimidation – He made holes look harder than they often are—a mental game.
Wind and Weather – On courses like Kiawah or Whistling Straits, weather is the wildcard.

Expert Insight:

For professionals: Expect to hit every shot in your repertoire. Dye courses reward creativity and strategy.

For amateurs: Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Choose the right tees, bring extra balls, and embrace the challenge.
