With the opening of The Cloister in 1928, Bill Jones and automobile magnate Howard Coffin created “a friendly little hotel” on the southern coast of Georgia. In the many years since Sea Island Resorts’ first guest, much in our world has changed. But some things, such as the values of treasuring family, friends, and nature, have remained timeless. As the resort has evolved through the years, the simple traditions that truly define Sea Island have been carefully preserved.
The Inn at Sea Island - A welcoming lobby with rich wood beams, soft cozy sofas and a crackling fireplace. The heated outdoor pool and the vibrant outdoor area with its wicker loungers, deep comfy chairs and bold bright stripes, look inviting before you ever step inside. The Inn, a St. Simons Island Hotel, embodies the same spirit, charm and warm hospitality as The Cloister and The Lodge, without the Forbes Five-Star distinction or amenities. Come home to bright, airy rooms with plenty of space to unwind. Quiet and expansive with high ceilings, elegant furnishings, inviting décor and comfortable beds.
Seaside Course - Seaside is the pinnacle of links golf. Situated at the southern tip of St. Simons Island at The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club, this ocean side course places a premium on careful shot selection, recovery, and putting. Offering Sea Island's most demanding layout, Seaside is the host venue for the PGA TOUR's McGladrey Classic. Seaside has also hosted multiple USGA events, challenging golf's best amateur players. Originally designed in 1929 by famed architects Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison, the Seaside Course was updated in 1999 by Tom Fazio – earning it a prominent place on Golf Digest's list of "Top 100 Courses in the United States." Tidal creeks, dunes, salt marshes and the St. Simons Sound frame the course, which plays fast, firm, and fun in the tradition of legendary Scottish links.
The Plantation Course - The Plantation Course Offers Beauty and Challenges At This Southern Golf Resort. With Rees Jones’s masterful renovation in 1998 of this Walter Travis original, the Plantation Course unfolds among a forest of ancient live oak and cedar, with a hint of danger lurking in its tidal creeks and lakes. Players appreciate the expansive fairways and stunning Atlantic Ocean views that make Plantation one of the best South golf courses.
Sea Island is located on the Georgia coast on the Atlantic Ocean and is easily accessible from three commercial airports and one private airport. Sea Island is approximately one-hour north of Jacksonville, Florida (JAX) and just over an hour south of Savannah, Georgia (SAV). Jet service on ASA/Delta from Atlanta is also available into Brunswick, Georgia (BQK), which is only twenty minutes from The Cloister. The private McKinnon St. Simons Island airport (SSI) is located on St. Simons Island, GA, 10 minutes from The Cloister.
