Neighboring and sharing the dunes that give Royal Birkdale its character is Hillside Golf Club. This must-play links course is often cited as “the best course to not have hosted an Open Championship”. Hillside Golf Club is a great place to visit as part of an England golf tour of the north coast or during a wider England vacation.
While Ireland and Scotland often receive the most critical acclaim, it’s England that has the most courses on the World Top 100 list, including Hillside.
The 18-hole Hillside golf course gained notoriety in 1982 when Greg Norman proclaimed “the back nine are the best in Britain”. This was seconded by Jack Nicklaus who agreed by saying “…within the second nine are some of my favorite holes”.
Close to Hillside, you’ll find the three Royals: Lytham & St Annes, Birkdale, and Liverpool, offering some of the finest links in the British Isles. Whether it’s a quick pit stop or a longer golf vacation, Hillside Golf Club is a must-play.
The Robert Trent Jones family may be the first family of American golf course architecture, but in English golf, it is three generations of Hawtree’s. Their firm dates back to 1912, a year after the original course opened.
In 1957, Fred Hawtree was brought in to do an extensive reimagining of the course (only 4 original holes remain). His vision opened in 1967 and quickly rose to be a favorite of the R&A for amateur championships, hosting Open Qualifying since 2014.
While Fred’s son, Martin, is a prestigious golf architect in his own right and one of two “Martins” the R&A relies on, it was Mackenzie & Ebert’s who were hired in 2020 to elevate the front nine to the storied level of Hillside’s backside.
The front nine is routed on a flatter stretch of land and the challenge was to develop dunes between the holes creating more drama. A secondary objective was to eliminate many of the green guarding bunkers, to be replaced by tightly mown runoff areas, allowing more creativity in chipping.
Along with the R&A, the DP World (European) Tour has discovered the magic of the course. The 2019 British Masters and the 2022 Cazoo Classic are just the beginning of a prosperous future hosting professional events.
Hillside Golf Club is private, but they extend a warm welcome to visitors that make them feel like a member for the day in their 1930s clubhouse, styled on a classic English country residence. Unlike many private clubs in the UK, Hillside allows late afternoon visitor play on Saturdays and midday play on Sundays during the season.
Founded in 1911 and redesigned in 1960 by Fred Hawtree, Hillside Golf Club is well known for being a superb example of classic links-style golf set in the lovely English countryside. It stands out thanks to its layout design, which turns the entire course into a sort of natural theater experience that can’t be found elsewhere.
Hillside’s major distinction lies in its split personality; the front nine is structured on flatter terrain, and the back nine rolls through more rugged terrain and pine forest. The back nine is regarded as one of the best that England has to offer. Hillside Golf Club is a complete package that combines a layout praised by both amateurs and professionals, a pedigree of hosting pro and amateur competitions, and stunning scenery.
Hillside Golf Club contains only one golf course, which is a standard 18-hole links-style course with one defining feature being the split front nine and back nine layout mentioned above. The front nine is generally easier thanks to the flat terrain, with most of the challenge being centered around accurate shots. The legendary back nine is a lot tougher, with it making the most of some towering dunes and elevated greens and fairways that maximize the natural difficulty from the coastal terrain.
Standout holes include the 10th par 3, which showcases a spectacular shot onto the green framed by dunes, while the 11th par 5 sweeps into a charming valley that many golfers believe is one of the most scenic examples of links-style golf in Britain. Most of the closing holes on this course will be memorable and purposefully designed to be challenging for most golfers.
Hillside golf course offers a charming blend of relaxed fun at the start and a more strategic and focused challenge at the end. The scenery is almost a postcard example of a traditional English links-style course, which is why the vast majority of golfers will have a fantastic time at this prestigious club.
Liverpool city centre is located only 15 miles south of Hillside, providing the ideal base to access this stretch of coastal golf. The four-star Pullman Liverpool is an ideally located modern hotel in Liverpool’s King’s Dock. Enjoy the bars, restaurants, and museums of Liverpool’s docklands, with the rest of the city right on your doorstep.
