Within a short drive of Portrush is the often underrated “Portstewart Strand Links”, beautiful and testing with many high dunes and holes near the sea. Since first opening in 1894, the Portstewart Golf Club has stood in the considerable shadow of its neighbor, Royal Portrush. In 1990, the club opened a stretch of seven holes (the 2nd through the 8th) that traverse dunesland, comparable in dramatic contour to that at any links. The new holes, which were designed by a small, internal committee well-versed in the dictates of modern course design, have thrust Portstewart into the top rank of Irish links. The opening hole is among the most talked about in Ireland … see for yourself. The club actually has 3 courses, the famous “Strand” which you play, plus the shorter “Old” and “Riverside” courses.
