Located in Palm Beach Gardens, PGA National golf offers five distinctive ranging from the demanding Champion course to the unconventional Match and short-form Staple. That gives golfers the opportunity to experience several styles of play without changing resorts between rounds.
The headline attraction is undoubtedly the Champion. Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio before later work by Jack Nicklaus, it has hosted some of professional golf’s biggest events, including the 1983 Ryder Cup and PGA Championship. Today, it is home to the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic.
But focusing entirely on the Champion would miss much of what makes a stay at PGA National Golf Club appealing. The wider course collection gives golfers enough contrast to build several rounds around one convenient base, whether the priority is championship golf, a more forgiving resort round or something completely different.
The Champion Course, which was originally created by Tom Fazio and his uncle George, and was later renovated by Jack Nicklaus in 2014, is the foundation of PGA National’s illustrious golfing history.
The Champion added the Ryder Cup to its list of tournament when it hosted the event in 1983. It currently serves as the host of the annual Honda Classic on the PGA Tour. The perilous closing holes, often known as “The Bear Trap,” are some of the most difficult in the World.
George and Tom Fazio created the Fazio Course, which was the first to be finished at the PGA National Resort. The strategically placed water hazards on Fazio’s 6,806 yard layout present the biggest hurdle, necessitating a mix of strength and accuracy. The Haig, which was named after the renowned Walter Hagen, a record-breaking winner in golf’s early years, features water in play on 15 holes.
Arnold Palmer, whose intense playing style is evident in his design at PGA National, created the Palmer Course. The par-5 on the 18th hole is a true all-or-nothing challenge, and one of the toughest holes for even the highly skilled golfer.

For a first visit, the Champion is the obvious priority for golfers who want to experience PGA National’s tournament history. From there, the choice depends on the type of trip.
Pairing the Champion with the Palmer can provide a useful contrast between a demanding championship round and a more forgiving resort experience. The Fazio is a strong option for golfers who still want a conventional 18-hole challenge, while the Match can introduce something different to a buddies’ trip where competition matters more than protecting a stroke-play scorecard.
The Staple can work particularly well later in the day or between more demanding rounds. Its short format means golfers can keep playing without turning every day into another four-plus-hour test.
For a three-round trip, the best combination therefore isn’t necessarily the three longest courses. Mixing formats can make each round feel more distinctive and leave the Champion as the centerpiece rather than simply another tee time.

The Butchers Club, a traditional American Steakhouse restaurant with a modern twist serving exceptional steaks and fresh seafood, is prominently displayed in the hotel foyer. The laid-back and informal Honeybelle is right next door and a great place to unwind before supper.
