The Algarve is often called a golfer’s paradise, and this is not just a slick way to market the location, because the golden beaches, rugged cliffs, and tranquil countryside sell most visitors immediately. This southernmost region of Portugal is blessed with year-round sunshine, incredible hospitality, and over 30 championship courses. The region has something to offer everyone, whether that’s a full-blown Algarve golf holiday or a casual weekend getaway.
The Algarve captures the hearts of thousands of visitors every year due to the local outdoor lifestyle and its stunning natural beauty. The region receives around 300 days of sunlight every year, making for a perfect location for year-round vacations of all kinds. This warm, stable climate offers the perfect conditions for golf.
The shoreline features golden beaches, crystal clear waters, and awe-inspiring coastal cliffs, whereas the inland areas offer cork forest, rolling sleepy hills, and gorgeous white washed villages.
Golfers looking for some standout experiences and to enjoy the local hospitality and scenery can be quite spoilt for choice. Montei Rei, for example, is tucked away in the eastern Algarve and is set against the backdrop of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains for an ultimate peaceful and luxurious getaway.
Towards the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo offer world-renowned courses as well as unforgettable views of wetlands full of birdlife and rare plants not seen anywhere else. If you want the authentic Portuguese seaside experience, Valmorra is situated near stylish marinas and miles of scenic coastline.
While it’s undeniable that the Algarve golf courses are a big draw, there is also a rich variety of attractions beyond the greens. The region contains a ton of historic sites like Silves, which showcases an imposing Moorish castle, or Loulé, known for its exciting market and traditional crafts.
The old town of Faro in the region’s capital winds along cobbled streets and is dotted with Gothic castles and the bone chapel of Igreja do Carmo.
The Algarve is crisscrossed with hikes and cycle paths leading to anywhere you could want to visit, and can be day-long trips or short jaunts to visit landmarks. The Algarve’s coastline is one of the region’s biggest draws and is packed with almost picture-postcard beaches, from hidden coves like Praia da Marinha to wide, sandy stretches ideal for sunbathing or water sports.
Algarve cuisine is at something of a high point, blending its rustic culinary heritage with fresh Atlantic seafood. While limited to certain times of the year, you might catch one of the region’s colourful festivals, such as the FIESA Sand Sculpture Festival or a local sardine festival.
Domes Lake Resort is an exceptionally well-equipped, 5-star rated property on the edge of Vilamoura Marina.
