What followed was a multi-generational project spanning the entire 20th century: stabilising the wild dunes, securing freshwater from the Sintra mountains, and planting by hand the umbrella pine forest that golfers thread through to this day. The golf course itself only opened in 2001, designed by Arthur Hills, but the landscape it occupies took three generations and nearly a century to create.
