West Cliffs Golf Course

Some golf courses are shaped to fit a destination. At West Cliffs, the landscape does much of the shaping itself.

Opened in 2017 and designed by Cynthia Dye, the West Cliffs Golf Course occupies a spectacular stretch of Portugal’s Silver Coast, where rolling sand dunes, coastal scrub and pine groves rise above the Atlantic. Rather than extensively reshaping the site, the course was designed to preserve as much of the existing terrain and native vegetation as possible.

The result is golf that feels deliberately wild around the edges. Fairways move through the natural contours of the dunes, sandy waste areas replace the manicured boundaries found on many resort courses, and changes in elevation repeatedly reveal views across the Atlantic.

That natural character also affects how West Cliffs plays. Uneven terrain, significant carries, exposed positions and coastal winds mean choosing the right line from the tee can be just as important as distance. It’s a course where the landscape isn’t simply something to admire between shots – it’s part of the challenge.

The par-72 West Cliffs Golf Course stretches to 6,930 yards from its longest playing positions, although one of its more unusual characteristics is the absence of conventional colored tee boxes. Instead, golfers are encouraged to select a course length suited to their ability.

It’s a particularly useful approach here. Several holes demand meaningful carries, and playing from an appropriate distance allows golfers to experience the strategy of Dye’s design without turning those natural features into unnecessary punishment.

The course is arranged as two interconnected nine-hole loops, with the front nine including consecutive par 5s at the 6^th and 7^th. The closing stretch provides a different test, finishing with demanding par 4s at 17 and 18. Four par 3s – the 2^nd, 5^th, 12^th and 16^th – punctuate the routing and make use of the site’s changing elevation and exposed coastal setting.

Perhaps the defining feature of West Cliffs golf links, however, is how frequently the golfer has to respond to what nature provides. Wind can change the effective length of a hole, elevated positions alter perspective and the rugged sandy terrain rewards careful course management rather than automatically reaching for the driver.

West Cliffs sits near Óbidos, approximately an hour north of Lisbon, placing it within one of Portugal’s most compelling emerging golf regions.

The Silver Coast feels noticeably different from the established resort landscape of the Algarve. Here, Atlantic beaches, dunes, fishing communities and historic towns surround a relatively compact collection of highly regarded courses.

That makes West Cliffs Portugal particularly appealing as part of a multi-round stay. Praia D’El Rey is only around three kilometers away and offers a contrasting Cabell B. Robinson design combining pine forest with Atlantic dune golf. Royal Óbidos is also nearby, providing a different challenge through the final design create by Seve Ballesteros.

For golfers who want to combine the coast with the capital, Premier Golf’s Lisbon itineraries can also incorporate West Cliffs alongside time exploring Lisbon itself.

West Cliffs operates throughout the year, although March through October is recommended as an especially good period to visit.

Because of the exposed Atlantic setting, wind should always be factored into the round. Conditions can significantly change how individual holes play, particularly where carries or elevated shots are involved. Choosing a suitable course length is therefore important even for confident players.

The club offers practice facilities, club and cart rental, a Pro Shop and an ocean-view clubhouse where golfers can eat or relax after their round.

West Cliffs is also well suited to a golf trip built around several nights in the same area. Its close proximity to Praia D’El Rey makes playing both straightforward, while Royal Óbidos adds another championship option nearby.

West Cliffs is located at Vau, near the medieval town of Óbidos, around one hour north of Lisbon.

Lisbon Airport is the most convenient international gateway, making the course relatively simple to reach for US travelers flying into the Portuguese capital.

Its location also creates the opportunity to combine two different sides of a Portugal golf vacation: the quieter beaches and championship courses of the Silver Coast with several days exploring Lisbon.

Outside golf, Óbidos and the nearby fishing town of Peniche provide easy options for sightseeing and dining, allowing golfers to experience more of the region without traveling far from the course.
