Like many golfers, South Africa has always been a bucket list destination for me. It stood out to me as one of the most unique places you can visit. It blends world-class golf, the stunning scenes of a safari, with some of the finest wines on the globe. Any trip that can combine those things is an easy “yes” for me.

As a golfer, I have always aspired to play the legendary Fancourt. During my visit, I was fortunate to experience all 3 championship courses: The Links, Montagu, and Outeniqua. Each offered its own distinct character and challenge but together, they created a perfectly balanced golfing experience that showcased the very best of the resort. Above all, The Links stood apart. Designed by Gary Player, the course exceeded every expectation I had. From the immaculate tee boxes to the pristine greens, every detail reflected world-class quality. It was immediately clear why The Links is regarded as one of the finest golf courses in South Africa and consistently ranked among the top courses in the world.

The stories I came back with, I will tell forever but when I first told friends and family that I’d be traveling to South Africa for a golf trip, the reactions were almost all the same. There was a mix of excitement followed by hesitation. Questions like “Is it safe?” and “That is a long flight, are you sure you’re ready for that?” came up more than once. I understood their concern; South Africa can feel distant and unfamiliar from afar. But after experiencing it firsthand, I can say with confidence that not only is a trip here entirely doable, it can feel seamless.

In this blog, I’ll share some of these common misconceptions I heard before my journey and how my experience proved them wrong. From travel logistics to safety, hospitality, and affordability, I hope to offer a new perspective and maybe even inspire you to embark on your own South Africa golf trip.

The Journey There – Easier Than It Seems

One of the biggest hesitations about traveling to South Africa is the distance. I will admit, when I started planning my trip, the thought of a 15-hour trip was daunting. The perception I had was that it was a place so far that it would be an endurance test, rather than a relaxing flight.

The reality couldn’t have been more different. Whether you are flying direct or connecting, getting to South Africa is surprisingly simple. On the way there, I flew out of Boston to Amsterdam to cut the flight in half. In just under 7 hours, I arrived. I took the time to stretch my legs and see a bit of the city before departing for my ultimate destination. 

Of course, you don’t have to break up the trip. With direct routes to Johannesburg from many of America’s major cities, all it takes is a little planning to make the hours fly by. On my return flight, I chose to fly direct. I woke up early on my final day in South Africa for one last game drive through the safari. Then, I headed to the airport in Cape Town to board my 9 pm flight. After my full day of soaking in the safari, I was falling asleep before the wheels were up. After a full night’s sleep, I only had about 8 hours left to fill with a few movies. Before I knew it, I was back home, filled with incredible memories and glad I didn’t let a long flight keep me from experiencing one of the world’s greatest golf destinations.

What most people don’t realize is that, despite the flight length, South Africa is only a 6-hour difference from Eastern time. The time change really is not much different from most European travel. It might sound insignificant, but it allows you to maximize your time directly upon arrival without fighting extreme jetlag.

A Country That Welcomes – The Hospitality and Safety

​Before coming to South Africa, I will be honest, I did not know what to expect. I had heard the concerns from those traveling to South Africa for the first time and their hesitations about accommodations and safety.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the warmth of the people. The entire team elevated my experience and made me feel right at home. The hotel staff was incredibly friendly, making sure my stay was as luxurious as I could have imagined. While walking around the hotel, I found myself engaged in conversations with many members of the staff about my stay, my day’s plans, and even being offered their recommendations. The wait staff improved the hospitality, providing a dining experience rather than just a meal.

South Africa is built for tourism. They have invested heavily in their infrastructure to create a world-class experience. While I was exploring the Garden Route, South Africa’s road network was exceptional. Roads are well-maintained, and the accessibility and options for transfers are vast.

The accommodations were also immaculate. At each location we stayed the team was phenomenal. While there, I took the opportunity to embark on multiple guided game drives. The experts who accompanied the drives provided a safe, but once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the terrain of the country and the animals in their natural habitat. It might sound hard to believe, but you can play too much golf. I can’t recommend enough making time to step off the course and see the natural beauty South Africa offers.

Worth Every Dollar – Surprisingly Affordable

A bonus of South African travel is that, once you arrive, you quickly realize just how much exceptional value exists alongside the world-class experiences. Dining out, wine tastings, and even domestic flights between regions are surprisingly reasonable. Unlike other destinations where indulging in the full experience can run up your tab, South Africa allows you to embrace your itinerary. Every safari, vineyard tour, and golf round I wanted to experience was within my reach.

When it comes to golf courses in South Africa, the value becomes even more striking. I played some of the world’s most iconic courses, many designed by legends like Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, for a fraction of what similar rounds in Europe or the United States would cost.

A Lasting Experience

South Africa is a true experience that has stayed with me even upon my return home. What surprised me most wasn’t just the beauty or the adventure; it was how easy it was to experience everything I had on my bucket list without compromise. The flights, the accommodations, the logistics, even the affordability all came together to create a journey that felt thoughtfully designed and effortlessly accessible.
