La Reserva Club

Sotogrande, Spain

Neighboring the iconic Valderrama on the Sotogrande golf estate in Spain’s Costa del Sol, La Reserva is a fantastic addition to any golf vacation in Andalucia. Designed by A Cabell B. the layout includes the signature wide sweeping fairways and striking white bunkers he is renowned for.

The La Reserva golf course opened in 2003, elegantly carved into the Andalucian hills with immaculate playing surfaces and large, quick greens. As one of the best courses in Spain, both amateurs and professionals enjoy visiting this course year-round.

The La Reserva golf course occupies an elevated position within the Sotogrande estate, offering spectacular views from every hole. The course makes for a testing day with the short stick, while the back tees measure 7,500 yards, a brutal test for any level golfer. More casual than its sister course, Valderrama, we highly recommend groups take a cart to get around.

The beautiful natural setting leads to very long distances between holes, making this course a challenging walk. Once you’re done for the day, the resort is equipped for everything you need, whether fine dining restaurants, a sophisticated social scene, or the exclusive beach club.

Discovering the magic of La Reserva Golf Club

La Reserva Golf Club, which opened in 2003, has distinguished itself as one of Spain’s top ten golf locations and is frequently ranked in the top 50 for all of continental Europe. Designed by the renowned American landscape architect Cabel B. Robinson, it sits in the Andalusia region, which was shaped over centuries by the Romans, Moors, and the Spanish.

La Reserva overlooks the Mediterranean, Gibraltar, and Africa, thanks to the mountain terrain that rewards players with a panoramic view of all the spectacular and unique scenery. La Reserva is considered to be strategic but fair and is ideal for golfers of all skill levels, thanks to its tactical use of water hazards and use of natural terrain.

The Course at La Reserva Golf Club

La Reserva is often considered to be the embodiment of Cabel B. Robinson’s design philosophy (“hard par, easy bogey”) and is one of the more approachable courses available in Sotogrande

The course is 18 holes total and runs fairly long at 7,500 feet with a par of 72. Its highlight features are wide fairways, large rolling greens, and strategic bunkering. Ryder Cup winner Manuel Piñero famously states that this course will “make you use all of your clubs.”

There can be lengthy journeys between each hole, but every walk contains unique views and a variety of vegetation that grows alongside undulating terrain. Finally, we need to mention Holes 6 and 17, with 6 being a downhill challenge that tests a golfer’s ability to manage risk and reward, whereas 17 is considered the signature hole due to water features that force aggressive and tactical gameplay.

“La Reserva rewards confident shot-making, but don’t mistake beauty for forgiveness. This course is all about precision. Off the tee, focus on placement over power; the fairways are generous, but positioning is key for setting up clean approach shots. The greens are large and undulating, so take your time reading them, especially on the back nine where the slopes get trickier. “
